Hey friends! The last couple of weeks I’ve showed you little bits and pieces of my kitchen makeover, like how we installed board and batten and how I filled that awkward little spot above the microwave. Well the makeover madness continues! I seriously think I should just tape the paint brush to my hand because it seems to be that I can’t put that darn thing down lately!
The kitchen island wasn’t in bad shape. It was white with a dark granite slab counter top. I added the nickel hardware when we bought the house and overall it looked nice and was very functional. The kitchen needed a pop of color though, and against the dark granite, I knew the Duck Egg Blue would look beautiful.
Can your kitchen island use a fun makeover? Here’s what you’ll need:
Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax
How To Brighten Up Your Kitchen Island
The first thing I did was scrub the entire piece down until everything was squeaky clean. Next, I taped the floors and the inner edges of the shelves. Then I got to painting!
With the chalk paint there is no sanding, or even priming, so I was able to paint the island without fuss or mess! I painted 2 coats of the Duck Egg Blue, allowing for some dry time in between coats.
This project took a grand total of 1.5 hours from start to finish. Granted the kitchen island isn’t large by any means, it’s ‘big enough’. The amount of time yours will take is going to depend on how large it is.
Lastly, once the piece was completely dry, I added a light coat of the Annie Sloan Clear Wax with a soft cloth. Later I went over it again with a dry cloth to ‘buff’ it.
The wax gave it a ‘worn’ look which I love! For a slight gloss you can buff it out more, but I really love this look!
I’m having the best time making over my kitchen and dining space! Come back tomorrow to check out the stools that turn this kitchen island to a breakfast bar!
